This project was developed as part of a design competition for a residential complex in Tabriz. The site was located on the edge of the city, adjacent to agricultural lands, and belonged to a socially and economically vulnerable community. This unique context became the foundation of our conceptual approach: creating a meaningful link between living spaces and the surrounding agricultural landscape.
Inspired by the structure, rhythm, and scale of the farmland parcels, we sought to bring part of this logic into the residential development. As a result, we designed a series of shared open spaces that function not only as green communal areas, but also as zones for small-scale urban farming, enabling residents to grow, produce, and consume their own agricultural products. This strategy enhances the quality of life, fosters a sense of self-sufficiency, and opens opportunities for local income generation within the community.
Given the economic constraints of the target users, each residential unit was designed with a strong focus on flexibility, adaptability, and user-led expansion. Families can gradually extend or modify their units based on their needs and financial capabilities. This adaptability transforms the project from a static housing block into a living, evolving environment that grows alongside its residents. Ultimately, the proposal is built on the principles of incremental development, context-driven design, and integration with the agricultural fabric of the region. While tailored for a low-income community, the project aims to go beyond minimum housing standards—becoming a human-centered, sustainable model for collective living.
